A holistic approach

NLA Høgskolen has a holistic view of education and therefore works both to educate well-qualified teachers and to ensure the quality of the transition from education to profession. Within the national UDIR-funded guidance scheme, NLA Høgskolen offers newly qualified teachers in kindergartens and schools guidance both in Oslo & the surrounding area and in Vestland. A good guidance scheme provides a safe start to a teaching career.

A safe arena

Being a teacher is about meeting children and pupils, and facilitating development and learning, both academically and socially. The transition from education to profession can be experienced as both exciting and demanding for newly qualified teachers. Teachers in kindergartens and schools have a great responsibility, and face many expectations, demands and complex situations in the profession. Everyday life in kindergartens and schools requires competence that cannot be developed through education alone. Then support from more experienced colleagues is important. A good guidance scheme provides a safe arena where newly qualified teachers can experience support in a demanding teaching life. In this arena, teachers receive help to connect theory and practice, and to develop a reflected pedagogical practice and awareness of the kindergarten/school's development.

Newly qualified and a teacher in a kindergarten or school?

Your first years as a teacher are particularly important. It is the responsibility of kindergartens/schools to offer you as a newly qualified teacher professional guidance. The guidance must be in accordance with national principles for guidance of newly qualified teachers in kindergartens and schools. Good guidance gives you a safe start to your teaching career, and is important when you are to translate knowledge and competence from your time as a student teacher into pedagogical practice in a new profession. The guidance, which is carried out individually and/or in a group with a qualified supervisor, further develops your competence and practice. Through guidance, you become a resource and contributor in the professional community in kindergarten/school. If you have not yet been offered guidance, you should request the offer yourself.
